FCL is committed to having a positive impact on our planet through the work that we do and the decisions we take.
This is embedded in what we do for our clients and is at the core of our Business As Usual:
This is embedded in what we do for our clients and is at the core of our Business As Usual:
- Offices: Our offices are re-purposed farm buildings where the carbon footprint of the construction has already been spent, and where the buildings have been refurbished to a high standard of thermal efficiency which negates the need for air conditioning and limits heating costs
- Office furniture: Wherever possible, we deliberately source used furniture for our offices, eliminating the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing and transporting new furniture.
- Flexible working: We encourage all employees to reduce the environmental impact of commuting where the nature of the work permits.
- Modern communications: We advocate the use of video and audio conferencing where face-to-face meetings are not essential or where attendees have to travel
- Minimal printing: Becoming paperless would be difficult for us to achieve, but we can and do make every effort to reduce printing to a minimum, storing and communicating documentation electronically wherever possible.
- Employee welfare: Our offices are located in an idyllic rural setting that is a pleasure to work in. We encourage healthy living, continuous professional learning and development
- Advocating lunchtime walks
- Providing water bottles to promote the consumption of the high quality drinking water available on site, and reduction of single-use plastics
- No catering is available on site, although kitchen facilities are available. We encourage packed lunches, and provide a range of plant-based snacks so that employees do not need to travel to buy lunch
- Access to technical mentorship and training courses
Junior Environmental advisory board
We are very much aware that it is the next generation that will inherit the consequences of decisions we take today. We want the consequences of our business to be positive ones, and very much aligned to the aspirations of the next generation.
To this end we have appointed a Junior Environmental Advisory Board, made up entirely of young people, to consider and advise the business on what we should be doing to increase the impact our actions have, whether directly or indirectly through engagement and education.
It is this board that decides how we offset our carbon footprint, how we impact society and what we might do that we don't already do to contribute to the global economy.

Net Positive
We are working towards becoming a Net Positive Organisation, which means that we put back more into society, the environment and the global economy than we take out.
EnvironmentStep 1: We will fully offset the carbon footprint of our operations. Although offsetting in the UK is more expensive, both the process and outcomes have a greater positive impact on our society and economy than other international schemes
Step 2: We will additionally offset the average per capita carbon footprint at the prevailing UK Government rate for each and every one of our employees Step 3: We will actively seek carbon footprint reduction opportunities for our clients in the services we deliver |
SocietyWhat carbon we need to offset, we do so locally through community schemes, whether local to our operations, or to the client we are working for.
We engage with academia for mutually beneficial initiatives that provide students with real-world industry experience and problems to work on, whilst providing us with new thinking and skills we do not possess. We offer internships along with other opportunities to develop talent of the future. |
EconomyOur impact is both global and local:
Global: We are subject matter experts working at the frontier of the Water Industry. Our efforts ultimately save money for water company customers whilst at the same time improving resilience, especially in reducing leakage and therefore the risk of water scarcity Local: We are located in a rural area of the UK, which is predominantly service sector. The rural economy and diversity of business needs support. We work with local businesses where possible, and intend to grow and offer opportunities to local residents |
